Women's Volleyball Overcomes Cornell, 3-0

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team stayed perfect in Ivy League play Friday night, overcoming Cornell University 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 34-32) inside Newman Arena.
Junior Elena Montgomery led the match in kills with 16, while junior Lindsey Kelly added a match-high 39 assists. Junior Cameron Dames tied the match-high in service aces with two, along with senior Grace Klepetka and Kelly, while also leading the match in kills with 16. Senior Julia Schner finished with a team-high four blocks.
The Tigers used an early 4-0 run to gain the upper hand in the opening set, and would take a 12-5 lead that resulted in a Cornell timeout following back-to-back Montgomery kills. Cornell narrowed the margin to 13-9, but Princeton held onto control of the set and extended its lead to 21-15 following Klepetka's second service ace of the set. The Tigers went on to prevail in the set, 25-21.
Back-to-back junior Avery Luoma kills gave Princeton a 6-3 advantage early in the second set, but a 3-0 Cornell run tied it up at 10-10. Montgomery's sixth kill of the night gave Princeton a 11-10 lead, and the Tigers built on the momentum via consecutive junior Olivia Schewe kills and a Luoma service ace that gave Princeton a 19-14 advantage; a Big Red timeout followed. Following kills by Montgomery and Schner, Princeton went on to win the second set with a score of 25-20.
The Big Red opened the third set on a 6-0 run that was halted by a Montgomery kill, but managed to extend their lead to 16-10 prior to a Princeton timeout. A Luoma service ace cut Cornell's lead to 19-18, then the Cornell took set point at 24-21. Princeton showed its resilience and battled back to tie it up at 24-24 following a Montgomery kill, then took match point on a block by Schner and junior Melina Mahood. The Tigers and Big Red continued to trade points; with the score knotted at 32-32, a pair of Cornell attacking errors saw Princeton win the set 34-23, and the match, 3-0.
