Women's Volleyball Stays Perfect in Ivy Play With 3-0 Win at Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team maintained its perfect record in Ivy League play Saturday inside Levien Gymnasium when it defeated Columbia University, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 26-24).
The victory, which was the Tigers' tenth-straight, moved Princeton to 11-2 overall and 5-0 in Ivy League play. Junior Avery Luoma led the match in kills with 14 on a .476 hitting percentage, while also leading the team in blocks with four. Junior Lindsey Kelly had a match-high 40 assists. Freshman Gracie Wood had a career and match-high three service aces, and junior Cameron Dames led the match in digs with 40.
Thanks to a pair of junior Elena Montgomery kills along with a double block by senior Julia Schner and Luoma, Princeton opened the opening set on a 3-0 run. Princeton would extend its lead to 7-2 following a block by junior Olivia Schewe and Luoma, and a Columbia timeout would follow as it attempted to halt the Tigers' momentum. Up 14-8, the Tigers used a 4-0 run sparked by a Montgomery kill to five Princeton a 19-8 advantage; from there, the Tigers would hold on to prevail in the first set, 25-14.
With help from a kill and a block by Luoma along with a Lion attacking error, Princeton opened the second set on a 3-0 run. Determined to not see a repeat of the first set, the Lions narrowed the margin to one point a 9-8. With the Tigers up 15-13, Princeton surged ahead thanks to a 3-0 run featuring a pair of junior Melina Mahood kills along with a kill by Luoma. Freshman Mariah Haislip made her second college appearance in the second set, and delivered an emphatic double block with Montgomery immediately after checking into the match to give the Tigers a 20-14 advantage. Princeton closed the set out with back-to-back Wood service aces to win it, 25-15.
Columbia jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the third set, but the Tigers tied it up 8-8 on a Montgomery kill. Princeton would take a 16-14 lead following a Columbia service and a Montgomery kill, resulting in a Lion timeout. The Tigers and Lions would trade points for the remainder of the set; with the score tied 24-24, kills by Schner and Luoma saw Princeton win the set 26-24, along with the match, 3-0.
