The rankings: While Princeton is third in the country, Virginia is No. 9, Stanford is No. 10 and Williams is No. 12. Princeton has all of the other current top 12 teams on its schedule this season.
The winners: Princeton's top three players from the Brown match, Elle Ruggiero, Raneem El Torky and Caroline Spahr, each have All-America honors to their credit, and fellow returner Andrea Toth was a winner at the fourth spot. Newcomers in Katherine Glaser, Katherine Sapinski, Molly Chadwick and Kristen Weil won at the sixth through ninth spots, and Emme Leonard, who has All-Ivy credentials, battled through a five-setter before coming up three points short in the final set at the fifth spot.
Against Virginia: Princeton has faced Virginia four other times, all 9-0 Tiger sweeps, including each of the last three competitive seasons. The Cavaliers also headed north last weekend, falling at Yale 7-2 before a 5-4 win over Columbia, and will play at Penn on Friday.
Against Williams: Though the teams did not meet in the 2019-20 season, Williams has been a mostly annual opponent for the Tigers, with Princeton winning the last 16 meetings since Williams' last win in the series in the 2002-03 season. Before playing at Princeton, Williams will open its season in Philadelphia at Drexel and Penn on Saturday.
Against Stanford: Princeton and Stanford have played annually since the 2007-08 season with Princeton winning 14 of the 16 matches, including the last meeting during the 2019-20 season in Philadelphia. Stanford last won the meeting prior in the 2019 Howe Cup third-place match. The Cardinal will play four matches this weekend in Philadelphia to open the season against Cornell, Penn, Amherst and Drexel.
Looking ahead: Princeton will be away from competition after Monday until hosting The Constable, a tournament set for Jan. 8-9.
