Women's Basketball Opens Season With Tough Slate This Week

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Women's Basketball team opens the 2021-21 season with three tough opponents.

When Princeton tips off against the Villanova Wildcats on Wednesday, it will be the first game for the 2020 Ivy League Champions in 613 days.

Villanova went 17-7 in last year and reached the WNIT quarterfinals. Princeton's next opponent, Delaware had its best campaign since 2012-13, winning 24 contests and getting to the WNIT semifinals last season. Boston U. reached the Patriot League Championship before falling to Lehigh.

Some familiar faces feature captains Abby Meyers, Julia Cunningham and Maggie Connolly. Cunningham collected Honorable Mention All-Ivy accolades in 2019-20 while Connolly showed statistical improvements in points, rebounds, assists, steals, field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage that season. Meyers has appeared in 51 career games highlighted by an Ivy League All-Tournament selection in 2018.

Expectations remain high for Princeton as it was selected as the No. 1 team in the Ivy League preseason poll. The Tigers collected 12 of the 16 first-place votes from the media to earn 122 points. Penn earned three first-place tallies, earning 108 points. Columbia was third (87) followed by Yale (82), Harvard (81, one first-place vote), Cornell (41), Dartmouth (29) and Brown (27).
