Princeton Rowing Takes On Philadelphia Squads On The Schuylkill River Saturday
April 23, 2021 | Heavyweight Rowing, Women's Rowing - Open, Women's Rowing - Lightweight, Men's Rowing - Lightweight
For the first time in 407 days, there will a Princeton Athletics event!
On Saturday, the Princeton rowing teams will head to Philadelphia, Pa., to row on the Schuylkill River.
"We are so excited to travel and compete as a boathouse," stated women's open rowing head coach Lori Dauphiny. "It is special and fitting for the Princeton boathouse to have every squad in the same place for the first race of the season. The teams have remained positive and determined through tough times. It is fantastic to have this opportunity to get back on the starting line together. We are grateful to all those who helped to make this happen. We look forward to honoring the occasion and our seniors by racing hard."
"It's actually hard to put into words what it means to our program to finally be out on the water racing again this weekend," mentioned women's lightweight head coach Paul Rassam. "We've been led by an incredible senior class and some very mature and determined freshmen and sophomores, so the team has really trained well.
"Over the last fourteen months COVID-19 has presented everyone with several losses, changes and challenges," said men's heavyweight head coach Greg Hughes. "That said, our time away from training and racing showed us how much joy rowing brings to our experience and we are very happy to have it back."
The heavyweight squad will take on St. Joseph's and Drexel, while both women's teams take on Drexel. The men's lightweight unit will battle Temple.
Spectators are permitted to attend the event, but all guests are required to wear masks, physical distancing must be practiced, any/all group gatherings are prohibited.
For those who cannot attend, we're working on a video/audio feed for the races and will provide more information when available.
It's been a long time coming for the rowing squads. The last time the Princeton boats raced in an event was 2019 NCAA/IRA Championships in June of 2019.
