Princeton Heavyweight Rowing Motivated For IRA National Championships
May 27, 2021 | Heavyweight Rowing
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton's men's heavyweight rowing team will participate in the IRA Championships this weekend at Mercer Lake.
The Tigers will have three boats in competition in the 1V, 2V and 3V. For each boat, it will race in a time trial with the top 16 advancing to the semifinals. Top two of each semifinal will move on to the Grand Final. The time trials are on Friday morning (May 28), the semifinals on Friday afternoon with the Grand and Petite Finals Saturday (May 29).
The time trials on Friday begin at 7 a.m., with the semifinals getting underway starting at 3 p.m. Saturday's finals start at 8 a.m.
"I can't tell you how excited I am to watch our team get after it at the IRAs," said head coach Greg Hughes. "Sure, we could look back and see so many things we felt like we may have missed or lost over these past 14 months, but through it all, the team has preserved and powered on. We are pumped to experience the thrill and energy that can only be felt when you're sitting on the starting line, and we are ready to leave it all out there."
Princeton ran its first race in 22 months on Apr. 24 with wins over St. Joseph's and Drexel on the Schuylkill River. A week later, the Tigers dropped Holy Cross and Navy. Hughes' squad's closest decision was 9.79 seconds.
At the IRAs, Princeton's V8 boat has not finished lower than seventh since 2010. During that stretch, it has collected two bronze medals. The 2V has secured four medals during that time with three silvers and a bronze. The 3V nabbed a gold in 2016.
No spectators are allowed at this year's IRAs. You can follow the action on social media here. Each day will also be streamed here.
