PRINCETON, N.J. – The NCAA announced its conference-level nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year award Monday, and Obiageri Amaechi '21 along with Clara Roth '21 earned the Ivy League's nominations. Princeton is one of just two schools in the NCAA to claim both of its conference's nominees.
The NCAA Woman of the Year Program is rooted in Title IX and has recognized graduating female college athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership since its inception in 1991.
Amaechi earned All-America honors in the discus twice, and qualified for the NCAA Championships every year that she was eligible. As a sophomore in 2019 she finished seventh, while she also placed 13th in 2021. Amaechi is the Ivy League record holder in the discus with a mark of 57.95 meters that she earned at Outdoor Heps in 2019. The Ivy League outdoor champion in discus in 2019, she was also Ivy League outdoor runner-up in 2018 and indoor runner-up in the shot put in 2019, an event she holds a program all-time top-five mark in. Amaechi was also a two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic selection.
"We are proud of Obi for being recognized for not only her amazing contributions as an athlete but also her success in the classroom and for her leadership across campus," said Head Coach for Women's Track & Field Michelle Eisenreich.
Roth is a two-time All-American field hockey player who also earned three All-Ivy and All-Region selections as a Princeton Tiger. During her stellar junior season which saw the Tigers reach the national championship game, Roth was named a Honda Sport Award Finalist, first-team All-America, Regional Player of the Year and first-team All-Ivy. She led all Ivy players in points and goals-per-game as she set career highs in both categories. As a sophomore, Roth collected her first All-America selection after being named the Ivy Offensive Player of the Year. She led the squad in goals, more than doubling her total from the year prior, and points. Roth is one of only 11 players in Princeton Field Hockey history to record 100 career points, nabbing 35 goals, 31 assists. Her 31 helpers are tied for seventh all-time.
"Our entire program is thrilled for Clara to be one of the Ivy League's nominees for NCAA Woman of the Year," said field hockey head coach Carla Tagliente. "She was the epitome of a leader on the field, in the classroom and in our community during her time as a Tiger. She set championships standards for herself and those echoed throughout our group."
The Woman of the Year Selection Committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will now choose the Top 30 honorees — 10 from each division — from the conference-level nominees. The Top 30 honorees will be announced in September. From there, the selection committee will narrow the pool to three finalists from each division. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will select the 2020 Woman of the Year from the nine finalists.
