Fillier, Thompson Win IIHF World Championship with Canada
August 31, 2021 | Women's Ice Hockey
For the first time since 2012, Canada is the IIHF Women's World Champion, and two Tigers helped the team reach the top.
Claire Thompson '20, Sarah Fillier, two years into her Princeton career, and Canada defeated the U.S. 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday night in Calgary, Alta., delivering Canada its first IIHF world title in nine years. The U.S. had won the last five tournaments, held every year since Canada's last win except in Olympic years. Canada had won silver in the four tournaments following the 2012 win, and then bronze in the last tournament held, in 2019.
Â
Thompson and Fillier are the first Princetonians to win an IIHF gold medal since Megan Van Beusekom '04 became a two-time champion with the U.S. in 2009.
The two Tigers combined for 10 points across the seven games, which Canada swept with four preliminary-round wins and then three in a row through the elimination bracket. Fillier had three goals and three assists, and blueliner Thompson had four assists.Â
At least one of the Princetonian pair had a point in each of the three elimination-round games, and Fillier assisted on Canada's first goal after falling behind 2-0 through the first period.
Thompson and Fillier have been in camp with Canada since late July and will remain in Hockey Canada's program as it prepares for the 2022 Olympic Games. Hockey Canada plans on naming the 23-player Olympic roster in December.
Thompson stands fifth among defensemen on Princeton's all-time scoring list with 87 career points on 31 goals and 56 assists, and Fillier finished her sophomore season in 2020 with 22 goals and 35 assists for the second straight year, giving her 70 assists and 114 points to stand already more than halfway to Princeton's career records for assists (122) and points (218).
Fillier, who competed her sophomore season in 2019-20, earned AHCA All-America honors in each of her first two seasons as well as All-ECAC and All-Ivy, and Thompson was an All-ECAC honoree twice during her career, All-Ivy three times and an Academic All-Ivy selection.
