No. 18 Duke Tops No. 13 Princeton 3-1
September 11, 2021 | Field Hockey
The Princeton field hockey team continued its season-opening streak of playing entertaining games against ranked ACC schools. The trend continued Saturday afternoon with another close, exciting game against Duke. Unfortunately for Princeton, the result was the same as the first two games, as Duke defeated Princeton 3-1.
The Tigers opened the season a week ago with loss to three-time defending NCAA champion North Carolina and then another to fifth-ranked Louisville, a Final Four last spring. That game went to overtime.
The game against Duke didn't go to extra time, though it was anyone's game late into the fourth quarter. Down by one after three, the Tigers put up seven fourth-quarter shots but couldn't get the equalizer, and the Blue Devils tacked on an empty net goal on a penalty corner in the last minute for the final margin.
It was a scoreless game at the half before Duke got on top on when Hannah Miller dribbled into the circle from the right side and crossed it to Leah Crouse, who chipped it into the Tiger goal. Princeton swarmed after that and tied it when Hannah Davey made a great run and then fed inside the circle, where Lily Webb directed it in for the first goal of her career, in her third career game.
The tie lasted little more than a minute, though, as Duke immediately turned a loose ball into a penalty stroke, which Lexi Davidson - sister of Princeton's Sam Davidson - converted. After having no goals in the first 30 minutes, there were suddenly three in the first 13 minutes of the third quarter.
Princeton had some chances in the fourth quarter but couldn't get it into the cage. Robyn Thompson, who made three fourth-quarter saves to keep it a one-goal game, was pulled with 1:54 left, and the final goal came when Duke few a corner with 37 seconds on the clock. The Tigers outshot the Blue Devils 20-11 on the day.
Next up for Princeton is the first road trip of the year, to Delaware Friday, before a home game against Boston University on Sunday the 19th.
