PHILADELPHIA – The Princeton University women's volleyball team stayed perfect at the City Classic Saturday night, overcoming host Temple University 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21) inside McGonigle Hall.
Princeton was led in kills by the reigning Ivy League Player of the Week, Elena Montgomery, who had 20. Junior Lindsey Kelly led Princeton in assists with a career-high 54, besting her previous career-high of 45 from Princeton's win over Cleveland State University on Friday, September 10. Junior Cameron Dames added a season-high 28 digs, topping her previous season-high of 23 from the Tigers' win over Cleveland State. The Tigers were led in blocks by senior Julia Schner, who had four, and in service aces by sophomore Krystal Raymundo with two.
The opening started off with little separation between the two teams, until back-to-back kills by junior Melina Mahood and a junior Avery Luoma service ace gave Princeton a 7-4 advantage. The set continued as a back-and-forth battle, until at 16-15 Princeton used a 5-0 run that featured three Montgomery kills to gain a 21-15 lead. Temple would call a timeout to attempt to halt the Tigers' momentum, but Princeton would hold on to win the set 25-22.
Temple came out ready to make amends in the second set; tied 11-11, the Owls went on a 3-0 run to take a 14-11 lead. Down 22-19, two Montgomery kills along with a block assist by Montgomery and senior Julia Schner saw Princeton narrow the margin to 22-21, but the Owls did just enough to earn the 25-23 win.
The Tigers would take a 12-10 lead in the third set, before going on a 3-0 run that featured a pair of Temple errors and double block by Luoma and Schner to give Princeton a 15-10 advantage. A kill and a block by Mahood along with a Temple attacking error saw Princeton jump ahead 19-11. Princeton maintained its high level of play, and prevailed in the third set 25-20.
Little separated the Tigers and the Owls at the start of the fourth set; ahead 9-8, Temple used a 3-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. The turning point came with Princeton down 15-14, as a Schner kill sparked a 4-0 that saw the Tigers surge ahead 18-15. Princeton never looked back, winning the set 25-21, and the match 3-1.
