Program Records Fall as Women's Golf Takes Princeton Invitational
September 26, 2021 | Women's Golf
In winning the Princeton Invitational for the first time in 14 years, the Princeton women's golf team turned in the best single round in program history, breaking that record by six strokes, and had the best three-round tournament in program history, breaking that record by 14 strokes.
The historic weekend came to a close on Sunday at Springdale Golf Club, where the Tigers finished at even par to card 864 for the weekend, surpassing the 2019 Harvard Invitational's 880 for the best three-round tournament score in program history. Princeton turned in an 8-under second round of 280 on Saturday to better the 286 posted at the 2019 Brown Bear Invitational. All of that added up to the team's first Princeton Invitational title since 2007, winning it in a field that included all six Ivy League programs.
The weekend was the third top-three team finish in as many tournaments for the program. Eight of the best 24 team rounds in program history have happened during the fall 2021 season, and two of the best six rounds in program history happened during the 2021 Princeton Invitational.
"Three tournaments in, the results speak for themselves. We're posting great scores consistently, and it's top-to-bottom. At this point, we've had three different lineups, three different tournament weekends, and all of the results have been solid, so that speaks to the depth of the team," Princeton coach Erika DeSanty said. "Keep watching. Keep watching the Tigers, following along, because this is just a stepping stone on the way we're going."
Junior Tiffany Kong paced the Tigers, finishing second overall by two strokes behind Albany's Amber Thornton as each player carded a second-round 66 on the way to their respective red-number finishes, Thornton at 6-under for the weekend and Kong at 4-under. Kong's 66 made her just the second player in program history to reach that number, along with Susannah Aboff '09 and her 65 at the 2008 Ivy League Championship.
"I played my best out there and I was trying to make every shot count since every shot counts toward our whole team," Kong said. "I can't help but be so amazed that I was able to contribute so much to the team this week. Including all my teammates together, we finished amazingly strong, so I was really proud that I was able to contribute to such a great team."
Princeton will continue its fall season at Delaware's Lady Blue Hen Invitational Oct. 16-17.
