Stenstrom, Classi, Butler Lead Princeton Past Brown 35-19
October 14, 2022 | Football
If you missed the first Blake Stenstrom to Dylan Classi touchdown pass in the third quarter of Princeton's game against Brown, then you got to see it again a few moments later. They were both things of beauty, and they were every bit a lethal as they were artistic.
Â
Stenstrom connected with Classi twice after halftime as Princeton pulled away from Brown, and then Ryan Butler squashed any thought of a Bear comeback with a bruising 49-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to lead Princeton to a 35-19 win over Brown Friday night on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium.
Â
It was a monster night for Classi, who caught a career high nine passes for 169 yards and his two scores. Stenstrom completed 19 of 27 for 258 yards and three TDs, including one in the second quarter to A.J. Barber.
Â
The win improved the Tigers to 5-0 (2-0 in the Ivy League) for the fourth straight season, the first time they have done that since 1904-07.
Brown, coached by former Tiger offensive coordinator James Perry, kept it close until Stenstrom and Classi did their thing. In fact, it was a 14-10 Tiger lead at the break after the Bears scored a TD on a pass from Jake Wilcox to Wes Rockett from nine yards out that was originally ruled incomplete and then overturned after review.
Â
If Princeton was in trouble, there was no panic. Instead, Classi made a great inside move and caught the perfectly thrown ball from Stenstrom from 22 yards out, something they'd duplicate minutes later from 34 yards away. You can't run a better route a throw a better ball than the two of them did on both plays.
Â
From there it was 28-10 Tigers, but Brown didn't go away. In fact, it was 28-19 after Wilcox connected with Allen Smith with 3:58 to go, but Butler, who has already been the Ivy League Rookie of the Week twice this season, burst through the line, helped by a great Carson Bobo block, and refused to go down, eventually reaching the end zone from 49 yards away to clinch it. Butler finished with 13 carries for 114 yards and two TDs. It was his first career 100-yard game.
Â
Liam Johnson led Princeton with 15 tackles.
Notes:
Blake Stenstrom almost doubled his touchdown total, throwing for three scores. He has also surpassed 250 yards passing in every game.
Classi's career high in catches (nine) puts him at 106 for his career. He's the 16th player in program history to surpass 100 career catches. He's also eighth all-time in career receiving yards with 1,702.
At first glance, Liam Johnson's 15 tackles are the most in a game since his brother, Tom, had 16 tackles vs. Yale on Nov. 11, 2017.
