Princeton to Visit Cornell in Saturday's Ivy Road Finale
October 24, 2022 | Women's Soccer
Heading out on the road for the final time this season, the Princeton women's soccer team will go to Cornell for a 1 p.m. kick Saturday.
Princeton (8-6-1, 1-3-1 Ivy) at Cornell (2-7-5, 0-3-2), Saturday, 1 p.m. | ESPN+ | Int'l Video | Live Stats
Series vs. the Big Red: Princeton leads the all-time series with Cornell 30-7-4 and has won 25 straight meetings with Cornell's last win coming in 1995. In Ithaca, Princeton has won the last 12, with Cornell's last home win over Princeton coming in 1994. Princeton has an active shutout streak against the Big Red of 388:22 since Cornell's last goal in the series in 2016. If Princeton can turn in another shutout, it would be just the second time in series history that Princeton has shut out Cornell for five straight complete games, along with a run from the 1998 through 2002 games. Â
On the plus side: If Princeton can get a win or a tie in either of its last two games, it would clinch a winning season for the team, which would be Princeton's 10th straight winning season. That would match Princeton's longest streak of winning seasons in program history, along with 10 in a row from 1997 through 2006.
Posting zeroes: Princeton goalkeepers Ella Gantman and Tyler McCamey have combined to author six shutouts this season, including in five of the last eight games, four of the last six, and two of the last three. When Princeton carries a shutout into halftime, the Tigers are 5-0-1 this season, with all six games as those shutouts.Â
Seniors: Of the six players who have started more than 10 games for the Tigers heading into the weekend, four are seniors, mostly in the backfield in Kamryn Loustau, Morgan Wiese and Gracyn Kuerner, with midfielder/forward Grace Sherman also in that group. All five available seniors have been key players this season, with keeper Ella Gantman splitting time with sophomore Tyler McCamey. Senior Marissa Hart has not played this season due to injury.Â
Returners: While the defense will feel a graduation impact, Princeton is able to return the scorers of 21 of the team's 22 goals this season, led by rookie Pietra Tordin (seven) and sophomore Heather MacNab (six). If Tordin finishes the season as the team's leading scorer, she'd be the first freshman to do that since Tyler Lussi '17 in 2013. If Tordin can get to double figures in goals, she'd be the fifth Tiger rookie to score 10 in a season, along with Lussi, who had 10 in 2013, Mimi Asom '19, who had 12 in 2015, Linda DeBoer '86, who had 12 in 1982, and Susan Mooney '85, who had 13 in 1981.Â
From the opening whistle: Of the 20 goals Princeton has allowed this season, 15 have come in the first half. When Princeton allows a first-half goal, Princeton's opponents have won six of the nine games. Princeton has outshot opponents overall in 12 of 15 games this season and on goal in 10 of 15Â games with one game even in shots on goal. Princeton's total shot advantage on the season stands at 263-136 and 105-69 on goal.Â
On Cornell: Seven players have found the back of the net for Cornell this season with Laken Gallman's four goals leading the way. Erica Fox (0-5-2, 1.57 GAA) and Nicole Shuman (1-2-3, 1.83 GAA) have split most of the minutes in goal. The Big Red will be looking to snap a three-game winless run (0-2-1) since a win over Colgate on Oct. 4.
