The Bronx, N. Y. – For the 23rd time in program history, the Princeton Men's cross-country team has been named the Ivy League Heptagonal Champions.
The Tigers were cheered on by a great crowd of family, friends, and Princeton alum on a beautiful, fall day in Van Cortlandt Park. The Tigers took off in the men's championship 8k race alongside other top Ivy League runners on Friday afternoon.
The leading pack of runners was a tight-knit group throughout Friday's race, but the Tigers managed to kick things into high gear when it mattered most.
Anthony Monte was the top Princeton performer of the day, taking third place. (24.11.6)
Notably, Connor Nisbet rose two places within the last 0.9 kilometers of the race to finish in fourth, (24.14.8) and Duncan Miller, surpassing two Harvard runners, also rose two spots in the final stretch to finish in ninth (24.26.8) and helped to secure the win for Princeton.
Daniel O'Brien placing eighth (24.22.6) and Jarrett Kirk finishing in 14th (24.36.5) also helped to contribute to the Tigers taking first and being named Ivy League Champions.
Following today's race Anthony Monte and Connor Nisbet were named First-Team All-Ivy and the trio of Daniel O'Brien, Duncan Miller, and Jarrett Kirk were all named Second-Team All-Ivy.
"The last half mile of today's race really showed the spirit of the Princeton team," said head coach Jason Vigilante. "With 3 minutes remaining we were not winning, yet each one of our men were so tough to the finish and we were able to overcome the deficit to pull out the win. There was so much support from track and field team, alumni and friends it was a special day and I'm so proud. A lot of credit goes to Duncan Miller who ran his first Heps and finished ninth. I'm so excited for our team and grateful for all the help from our administration, the Friends of Princeton Track, Brooke our trainer, Coach Samara, Coach Abdullah, Allan our strength coach and especially Samantha our director of operations. They all contributed to this thrilling victory."
