After Meeting With Billie Jean King, No. 8 Princeton Tops Dartmouth
October 08, 2022 | Field Hockey
The Princeton field hockey team spent its pregame with women's athletic royalty, an experience that left the Tigers thrilled. Princeton then spent the game trying to solve a goalie who had an epic performance, an experience that left the Tigers frustrated.
Well, frustrated, and victorious.
No. 8 Princeton defeated Dartmouth 1-0 to improve to 3-0 in the Ivy League and 9-4 overall with its fourth straight win. The Tigers outshot Dartmouth 27-2 and were held in check by Dartmouth goalie Hatley Post, who made 19 saves, the most by any goalie in a Division I game this season.
Princeton spent its pregame hearing from the legendary Billie Jean King, who spoke to the team about her philosophies and values. King met with the Tigers for about 20 minutes and then posed for photos with the players and coaches.
As for the game itself, Princeton dominated, with the ball in the Dartmouth end for pretty much the entire afternoon. Beth Yeager scored off a penalty corner, with assists to Grace Schulze and Ophelie Bemelmans, midway through the first quarter, but that would be it for the scoring.
Most of the reason why was Post, who made save after save after save as the game went along. By the fourth quarter, she'd bettered this season's previous Division I high of 17 saves, though she was a long way off the Ivy League record of 50 in one game (back in 1987).
Princeton and Harvard are the lone unbeatens in the Ivy League at 3-0. The Tigers are at Cornell this coming Saturday.

The other reason the score stayed 1-0 was Princeton defender Autumn Brown. Dartmouth managed two shots, and they were in a bang-bang sequence in the second quarter where Tiger goalie Robyn Thompson made her only save of the day and then Brown made a great defensive save of a ball that was heading into the cage on a follow up shot.Autumn Brown keeps it a 1-0 game with the great defensive save. pic.twitter.com/RE2ikHUvkS
