Wunder Nets First Career Goal as Tigers Complete Weekend Sweep of Syracuse
November 12, 2022 | Women's Ice Hockey
For the second straight game and the third time in the last five on the new season, a Princeton rookie has scored her first career goal. Issy Wunder had the honor Saturday, and the first-period goal ended up being the only one of the afternoon in a 1-0 win over Syracuse at Baker Rink for the No. 15-ranked Tigers.
Classmate Katherine Khramtsov, who assisted on Wunder's goal, scored the first of her career Friday night, and Emerson O'Leary did so Oct. 29 against Cornell.
Sarah Fillier won a draw with 2:30 to go in the opening period and after Kate Monihan and Khramtsov worked to evade Syracuse defenders along the wall to the left of Orange netminder Arielle DeSmet, Khramtsov skated to the corner and sent a pass along the boards to Fillier behind the net, and Fillier found Wunder for a one-timer in the slot.
Fillier, the returning Olympic gold medalist with Canada who helped lead Princeton to an NCAA tournament berth in her last season with the program in 2019-20, had a four-point weekend with the assist and had a point on four of Princeton's five goals in the sweep.
Princeton sophomore goaltender Jennifer Olnowich made 15 saves to get her second career shutout and first since a 5-0 win over Union on Jan. 16, 2022.
Now 3-3 on the season and with wins in three of its last four, Princeton will return to Baker Rink next weekend to host St. Lawrence Friday and Clarkson Saturday, both 3 p.m. starts. St. Lawrence is the first team out of the top 15 in both the DCU/USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine rankings while Clarkson is No. 11 in both polls.
