Princeton Wraps Up Outright Ivy Title With 3-1 Win At Columbia, Looks Ahead To NCAA Draw
November 05, 2022 | Field Hockey
The de facto Ivy League field hockey championship game was two weeks ago. Senior Day and the actual Ivy clincher was last weekend. The NCAA tournament draw is a day away.
Â
With all that, there was still a great deal to play for as Princeton finished its regular season Saturday at Columbia. For starters, there was the matter of an outright Ivy League championship, something that would be accomplished with a victory. There was also the matter of NCAA seeding and even the possibility of hosting the first rounds, both of which required a Princeton victory.
Princeton, with a dominant performance, took care of all of that.
Â
Sam Davidson, Beth Yeager and Grace Schulze were the goal-scorers as Princeton took down Columbia 3-1 to finish the regular season at 13-4 overall and 7-0 in the Ivy League. The 2022 season becomes the 20th in which Princeton field hockey has had a perfect run through the league season.
Â
The Tigers went into the game at Columbia knowing that they already sewn up the Ivy League's automatic NCAA bid a week ago with a 2-0 win over Brown. Still, a Harvard win over Brown and a Princeton loss to Columbia would have given the Crimson a share of the championship, and the Crimson held up their end with a 2-0 win of their own against the Bears.
Â
Princeton, who took control of the league race by taking down Harvard 4-2 two weeks ago, improved to 24-1 all-time against Columbia with the win. Davidson started the scoring four minutes in when she converted a penalty stroke, making her 7 for 7 on the year and 9 for 9 for her career, but Columbia answered quickly after that.
Â
It was a 1-1 game at the break before Talia Schenck slid a pass to Yeager just inside the circle, and Yeager drilled a reverse blast into the cage to put the Tigers back on top. Schulze sealed it with a fourth-quarter goal that was set up by Hannah Davey, who swept towards the goal off a corner and then crossed it, where Schulze tapped it in on the back side.
Â
The NCAA selection show will be Sunday night at 10 on ncaa.com.
