Men's Basketball Drops Close Contest to Hofstra, 83-77

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University men's basketball team opened its 2022-23 season Monday night inside Jadwin Gymnasium, dropping a close contest to Hofstra, 83-77.
The Tigers were led by senior Tosan Evbuomwan, who had a team-high 22 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the field and seven rebounds. Senior Keeshawn Kellman went a perfect 9-for-9 from the field for a career-high 21 points; his shooting performance ranks second all-time in school history for made field goals without a miss. The school record belongs to Barnes Hauptfuhrer '76, who went 11-for-11 against Notre Dame in 1974.
Freshman Caden Pierce led the team in rebounding with 10, while junior Matt Allocco's four assists were a team-high.
While Kellman got off to a hot start, scoring the Tigers' first five points of the contest, the Pride took control early, gaining a 16-15 advantage with 12:05 remaining in the half.
The Tigers showed resilience; A thunderous two-handed slam by Kellman ignited a 9-0 run that saw Princeton surge ahead,25-16, following a pair of free throws by Evbuomwan at 9:04.
Shortly after, a 6-0 run sparked a pair of senior Ryan Langborg free throws saw the Tigers extend their lead to 12, 40-28, and the Tigers would go on to take a 42-38 lead into the half. Evbuomwan and Kellman were dominant in the first half, combining for 28 points.
Princeton opened the second half with a layup by Allocco followed by a deep three-pointer by Langborg, taking a 47-38 lead with 18:51 left to play. The Pride narrowed the deficit to three, 52-49, at 14:10, but a three-pointer followed by a put-back by Pierce saw the Tigers extend their lead to 10, 63-53, with 10:48 on the clock.
Hofstra began to chip away at the lead, using a 6-0 run to cut it to two, 65-63, with 7:31 left to play. A pair of Evbuomwan free throws with 2:43 on the clock put the Tigers ahead 76-71, but the Pride responded with a 10-0 run, jumping ahead 81-76 with 0:19 remaining. From there, Hofstra managed to hold on for the 83-77 victory.
