Olympic Gold! Fillier, Thompson Help Canada Past U.S. at Beijing Games
February 17, 2022 | Women's Ice Hockey
Canada's perfect seven-game run through the Olympic tournament is complete, and for the first time, Princetonians have won Olympic gold in women's ice hockey.
With a 3-2 win over the U.S. early Thursday (ET), Canada won Olympic gold in women's ice hockey for the fifth time since it became an Olympic sport in 1998. Sarah Fillier '24 and Claire Thompson '20 were major contributors along the way, with Fillier scoring eight goals, second-most in the tournament, and 11 points while Thompson led all blueliners in the tournament with 13 points (two goals, 11 assists), including an assist on Canada's first goal in the gold-medal game. The total set a record for points by a Canadian defender in a single Olympic Games, and Thompson also led all players in the tournament with a plus-minus of +23.
Fillier and Thompson, who were making their Olympic debut, give Princeton three students/alumnae who have won Olympic medals in women's ice hockey, along with Andrea Kilbourne '03, who won silver in 2002 with Team USA. Fillier and Thompson are also the first Princetonians who were varsity athletes at Princeton to win Olympic gold at the winter Games.
Princeton's presence at the Olympic women's ice hockey tournament went beyond Fillier and Thompson. Kim Newell '16 was the goaltender in three of China's four games in the round-robin portion of the competition, helping China come close to making the knockout portion of the draw in what was her Olympic debut as well. Kelly Cooke '13, whose refereeing career has taken her to the American Hockey League, drew the assignment as one of the two referees in the gold-medal game in her first trip to the Olympics.
