Baseball Defeated in Doubleheader Against Purdue
February 25, 2022 | Baseball
HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. – Princeton faced a stout test in its first game in more than two years but was defeated in both games of a season-opening doubleheader against Purdue, 9-3 and 8-3, respectively.
Jackson Emus put in a solid shift on the mound in game one, tossing six innings with six strikeouts, one walk, four hits allowed, and one earned run allowed in his first start of the season.
Nadir Lewis and Jordan Kelly each knocked a solo home run, while Caden Shapiro and Brendan Cumming each drove in their first collegiate RBIs.
Game 1
Purdue jumped in front early with an RBI single in the bottom of the first, and a bases loaded HBP in the third to establish a 2-0 lead. The Tigers found themselves right back in the game as a leadoff double and some heads-up base running from Alejandro Espinel put them in scoring position. Cumming put Princeton on the board with an RBI single to left, plating Espinel.
Although Princeton kept themselves within striking distance for most of the game, Purdue gave itself a comfortable lead with seven consecutive runs to take a 9-1 lead heading into the final frame. Princeton tried to claw its way back into the game, scoring on a fielding error and a sacrifice fly, but could not build further on the pair of runs scored in the top of the ninth.
Game 2
The Tigers fired in front early in the game as Shapiro plated Lewis with a fielder's choice in the top of the second. Purdue fielded an immediate response with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 1-1.
Lewis propelled Princeton back in front, pulling a solo shot over the right field wall to reestablish a 2-1 lead.
However, Purdue would respond once more, scoring seven total runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to develop a six-run lead. J. Kelly sliced into the deficit with another solo home run in the top of the eighth, but it wouldn't be enough to spark a comeback as the Tigers were defeated, 8-3.
