Men’s Basketball Clinches Share of Ivy Championship With 74-73 Triumph at Harvard
February 27, 2022 | Men's Basketball
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – It came down to the dying moments Sunday afternoon inside Lavietes Pavilion, but a layup by junior Tosan Evbuomwan with 4.8 seconds left put the Princeton University men's basketball team in front of Harvard University, 74-73, and helped the Tigers secure their 28th Ivy League Championship in program history.
The victory over the Crimson clinched at least a share of the title for the Tigers, who have one regular season contest remaining. It moved them to 21-5 overall, and 11-2 in Ivy League play.
Evbuomwan led the game in points with 18 on 8-for-14 shooting, along with rebounds with eight, and assists with four. Senior Jaelin Llewellyn added 16 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while senior Ethan Wright added 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting, along with five rebounds. Senior Drew Friberg and junior Ryan Langborg also each scored nine points, and senior Elijah Barnes came off the bench to score eight points on 3-for-4 shooting, and grab four rebounds in nine minutes.
The game began as a back-and-forth battle; after an Evbuomwan layup with 19:10 on the clock, the Tigers and Crimson traded baskets. A layup by Wright at 15:11, following by a Langborg three-pointer with 14:40 left in the half extended Princeton's lead to five points, 13-7.
Princeton maintained its advantage, with help from an Evbuomwan layup with 10:25 on the clock, followed by a pair of Llewellyn free throws at 9:16 that put Princeton ahead, 19-13. A three-point play by Barnes then gave the Tigers a 22-16 lead with 8:25 remaining in the half.
Back-to-back layups by Evbuomwan and Wright saw Princeton take a 26-18 lead, with 5:47 left in the half, but the Crimson battled back to make it a two-point game, 32-30, at 1:48. Evbuomwan threw down a powerful two-handed dunk with 0:30 on the clock, and the Tigers took a 34-32 lead into halftime.
Evbuomwan got the Tigers on the scoreboard first in the second half, with an up-and-under at 19:02 to give Princeton a 36-32 lead. The two teams would then trade baskets, until back-to-back three-pointers by Friberg and Llewellyn gave the Tigers a 51-43 advantage with 13:40 left in the half.
Harvard responded with a 13-0 run, jumping ahead 56-51 with 10:09 remaining. A Friberg three-pointer with 9:02 on the clock put a stop to Harvard's run, then a Wright three-pointer saw Princeton pull within one point, 58-57, with 8:15 remaining. Evbuomwan then gave the Tigers the lead, dropping in a left-handed layup at 7:19.
A corner three by sophomore Matt Allocco gave Princeton a 62-61 lead with 5:35 left to play, then Wright extended the Tigers' lead to 72-69 following a layup with 2:06 left to play.
The Crimson bounced back and took a late lead, 73-72, with 0:18 remaining. With 0:09 on the clock, Friberg inbounded the ball from the baseline, lobbing it to Evbuomwan at the top of the three-point arc. He drove left, blowing past the Crimson defender and laying the ball with his left hand with 4.8 seconds remaining, giving Princeton a 74-73 lead.
Harvard missed a desperation heave from just inside half-court as time expired, and the Tigers held on for the 74-73 triumph.
