Sarah Fillier drew the penalty that led to a Canadian power play and had the first assist on Canada's opening goal on that power play on the way to a 4-2 win over the U.S. to close group play on Tuesday morning (ET) at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Canada will face Sweden, the third-place finisher from Group B, in a quarterfinal at 8:10 a.m. Friday (ET).
Against Team USA, Fillier drew a cross-checking penalty with 6:26 to go in the opening period, and 36 seconds later, Canada's Brianne Jenner scored after Fillier sent a pass from behind the goal line to Jenner in front of the crease for a 1-0 Canadian lead.
Each team scored twice in the second, with the U.S. scoring its two goals first and Canada answering with two to take a 3-2 lead into the third, where it added another goal for the 4-2 final.
With the preliminary round complete, Fillier co-leads the tournament with five goals scored, alongside teammate Jenner, and Claire Thompson '20 is third overall in assists and tops among blueliners in that stat, behind teammates Natalie Spooner and Marie-Philip Poulin, with five.
Tuesday's results meant the Olympic run of China's women's team is complete, with China finishing 1-2-1. Kim Newell '16 (Zhou Jiaying) went 1-1-1 in her three games in goal, accruing a 1.31 GAA. Newell's GAA was third among teams' primary goaltenders, behind only the Czech Republic's Klara Peslarova (1.18) and Japan's Nana Fujimoto (1.25).Â
