Tigers Split Final Day in Santa Barbara
March 13, 2022 | Softball
The final day at UC Santa Barbara's weekend event saw Princeton get a split with a 2-1, eight-inning win over Manhattan before a 3-0 loss to South Dakota State.
The games were Princeton's last before the Ivy League season begins on Saturday at Princeton Softball Stadium at Strubing Field against Brown.
Princeton and Manhattan played three innings on Saturday before darkness intervened, and the teams began the day with a scoreless tie in the fourth inning. In that inning, Adrienne Chang had a triple and Sophia Marsalo followed with a sacrifice fly to put Princeton in front. It stayed 1-0 for the Tigers into the bottom of the seventh, when the Jaspers' Lauren Rende had a two-out double to pick up a leadoff walk and tie it.
In the eighth, with the tiebreaker runner on second base, Ashley McDonald had a base hit to give Princeton the lead. In the bottom of the inning, Princeton got two ground balls, including one that resulted in the tiebreaker runner getting caught off base, to seal the win.
Chang finished with three hits on the game and Ali Blanchard went the distance in the circle, striking out 11 while giving up the one run on four hits and three walks, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The strikeout total was just one off Blanchard's career high of 12 against Brown on April 6, 2019.
Against South Dakota State, all three runs came in the second inning as a single and a walk put two on for Cylie Halvorson, who hit a three-run homer to put the Jackrabbits in front.Â
South Dakota State's Tori Kniesche was perfect through 11 batters before Allison Ha had a base hit in the fourth. The Tigers had two hits in the sixth, from Serena Starks and McDonald, and had three on in the seventh, on base hits from Marsalo and Haley Hoffman and on a hit batter by Madison Hamilton, but South Dakota State held on.
Alexis Laudenslager and Molly Chambers split the time in the circle against South Dakota State.
