Heavyweight Rowing Retains Navy-Princeton Rowing Cup
April 02, 2022 | Heavyweight Rowing
ANNAPOLIS - The Princeton heavyweight rowing team emerged victorious in a close race with Navy to retain the Navy-Princeton Rowing Cup. With the win in the 1V, the Tigers also secured the annual Navy-Princeton Heavyweight/Lightweight point trophy, breaking what was a 3-3 tie to that point.
Rowing into a 10mph crosswind, the No. 8 Tigers defeated the No. 12 Midshipmen by 0.9 seconds to win the First Varsity race, crossing the finish line first in 5:49.0.
The win was one of four for Princeton, as the Tigers also claimed wins in the 2V, 3V and 4V. Outside of the 1V, Princeton's three other victories were with comfort as the 2V (5.3 seconds), 3V (9.3 seconds) and 4V (5.6 seconds) each had open water between them and Navy.
"It was an early morning, but a productive one for our team," said head coach Greg Hughes. "In our first cup race since 2019, it was as competitive as always against the Naval Academy. The racing was fierce on all levels. After three years without racing like this, it was such a thrill to have it back. We learned a lot down there and I am excited to get back to work in preparation for the Childs Cup this coming weekend."
Princeton has now won 26 of the last 27 dual races with Navy.
Next up for the Tigers is the Childs Cup against Columbia and Penn on April 9 at Overpeck Park.
