Thompson Named Ivy Defensive Player Of The Week
September 12, 2022 | Field Hockey
Robyn Thompson came into the Princeton field hockey team's two games this weekend with a career high of seven saves in a game. When the weekend sweep was over, a game with seven saves was suddenly her third-highest total.
Â
Thompson, a junior from England, put up matching eight save/one-goal against efforts as the Tigers swept No. 7 Syracuse 5-1 and No. 15 Rutgers 4-1. Her performances in the two games earned her Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Â
Syracuse for its part came into the game against Princeton as the highest-scoring team in Division I field hockey with 5.5 goals per game. Rutgers, the No. 1 seed in last year's NCAA tournament, scored its goal with 1:10 to play to spoil the shutout.
Â
"Robyn has had a great start to the season," says Princeton head coach Carla Tagliente. "She's seeing the ball well and playing with a lot of confidence. She's also bringing great vocal leadership to the defense. She did a great job this weekend, and we're all really happy to see her get recognized."
Â
Princeton will next play a series of five home games in a 10-day stretch, beginning Friday at 4 against Delaware, who was ranked 24th last week. After that will be No. 1 Northwestern, the defending NCAA champion, at noon Sunday and then No. 3 Maryland at 4 on Sept. 20. The Ivy League season will begin against Penn on Sept. 23 at 4, with a game against Lafayette on Sept. 25 at noon.
