2022 Season Begins for Women’s Volleyball With 3-0 Triumph Over Morgan State

TOWSON, Md. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team opened the 2022 season at the Towson Tournament with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-11) triumph over Morgan State, before falling 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 26-25, 25-22) in a hard-fought contest to Towson, Friday inside SECU Arena.
Senior Avery Luoma led the Tigers in kills on the day, compiling 29, while Lindsey Kelly's 69 total assists also led the team. Freshman Ella Bunde had a team-high four service aces across the two matches, while senior Cameron Dames led the way with a team-best 38 digs. The Tigers were led in blocks by freshman Lucia Scalamandre, who had five.
In the Tigers' second match of the day, senior Melina Mahood's 17 kills tied her career-high, as she also recorded 17 kills on Friday, October 15, 2021, against Yale. Sophomore Mariah Haislip also tied her career-high in kills against Towson, finishing with nine. Haislip tallied nine kills for the first time on October 30, 2021, at Dartmouth.
Princeton vs. Morgan State
As a team, Princeton used a .305 hitting percentage and 10 service aces to help overcome the Bears.
The Tigers took a 9-7 early lead in the first set, but a kill by senior Mahood sparked a 7-0 run that put Princeton ahead, 15-8. With Princeton up 16-10, a freshman Valerie Nutakor kill led off a 6-0 run, giving the Tigers a 21-10 advantage from which it would not relinquish, winning the first set of the 2022 season, 25-15.
Princeton took a 3-0 lead in the season set, but the Bears narrowed the deficit to two points at 16-14. A kill by Luoma sparked a 5-0 run, that featured back-to-back Dames service aces, which saw the Tigers take a 12-14 lead and go on to win the set, 25-16.
Morgan State took a 2-0 lead in the third set, but Princeton rattled off four consecutive points to jump ahead, 4-2. With help from two more 4-0 runs, the last giving the Tigers match point at 24-10 after a kill by sophomore Gracie Wood, Princeton won the set 25-11, and the match, 3-0.
Princeton vs. Towson
Towson jumped out to a 10-7 lead in the first set, but a Haislip kill led off a 4-0 run that gave the Tigers an 11-10 lead after a solo block by Scalamandre. Towson battled back, and took a 19-15 lead after a 3-0 run. Princeton showed resolve, tying it up at 21-12 after a kill by Mahood, before closing the set out on a 4-0 run to prevail, 25-23.
While Towson took a 20-15 advantage in the second set, a Mahood kill sparked a 5-0 run that saw the Tigers tie the score at 20-20. Mahood's 10th kill knotted the score at 21-21, but Towson managed to hold on for the 25-22 second set victory.
Sparked by a Haislip kill, the Tigers used a 5-0 run to surge ahead, 9-7, in the third set. A 3-0 run later in the set saw Princeton take a 16-12 lead, but a 5-0 run gave Towson a 21-20 lead. Princeton battled back and got ahead 23-21, but would fall just short at 26-24.
Princeton fell in an 8-5 hole early in the fourth set, but battled back to tie the score four times before taking a 19-17 after a 5-0 run sparked by a Nutakor kill. An attacking error by Towson saw the Tigers take a 21-20 lead, but Towson's home court advantage propelled it to a 25-22 win in the fourth set, and a 3-1 victory in the match.
