Beth Yeager Named Ivy Offensive Player Of The Week
September 26, 2022 | Field Hockey
The problem with turning points is that it's not always easy to tell if one just happened until much later in, say, a game, or even a season.
It's very possible, though, that the Princeton field hockey team's 4-3 overtime win over No. 3 Maryland last Tuesday was a turning point in a season that to that point had been defined by one-goal losses to the top teams in the country. And now, down a goal in the waning minutes, Princeton looked like it was headed to another such excruciating loss.
Then Beth Yeager tied the game with less than two minutes to play. Then Yeager won it in overtime. Instead of a tough ending, Princeton had itself a huge win. Three days later, it had another one, defeating Penn in its Ivy opener 2-1, the first goal courtesy of Yeager, who also assisted on one Princeton goal and set up the other one when she drew a penalty stroke in the 3-2 loss to Lafayette Sunday.
Added up, it was a three-goal, one-assist week for Yeager, who earned Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week honors for her performances. It's the third time in her career that the sophomore, a first-team All-American last year as a freshman, has won the award.
Yeager is currently second in the Ivy League in goals per game and points per game and is in the top 20 in Division I in both as well.
Princeton will play three straight road games beginning Friday at Yale and then continuing at UConn Sunday and then Monmouth Oct. 5.
