
Men’s Basketball Falls Just Short at Brown, 72-70

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite leading at halftime and in a contest that went down to the final seconds, the Princeton University men's basketball team fell just short against Brown Saturday afternoon inside the Pizzitola Sports Center, 72-70.
Junior Matt Allocco led the Tigers with a career-high 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field and 4-for-7 shooting from three, with his four made three-pointers tying his career-best. Senior Ryan Langborg finished with 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field and 3-for-6 shooting from three, while senior Tosan Evbuomwan added 10 points, and a game-high eight assists. Junior Zach Martini tied his career-high with eight points on 3-for-4 shooting from the field and 2-for-3 shooting from three, and the Tigers were led in rebounding by freshman Deven Austin, who pulled down a season-high six.
The Bears used an early 8-0 run to race out to a 10-6 lead with 17:12 on the clock, but three-pointers by Langborg and Allocco put the Tigers in front, 12-10, with 14:48 remaining in the half.
Allocco sank a pull-up three-pointer with the shot clock expiring, and gave Princeton a 17-14 advantage with 12:27 on the clock. Shortly after, the Tigers extended their lead to five at 24-19 following a Lee three-pointer from the top of the circle at 9:40.
Brown narrowed the deficit to two, but Allocco's third three-pointer gave Princeton a 27-24 lead with 8:04 on the clock. A pair of three-pointers by Martini gave Princeton a 33-29 advantage with 5:35 remaining in the half, and an Allocco layup at 4:51 led off a 6-0 run that put the Tigers ahead, 39-30, with 3:05 on the clock. After shooting 17-for-27 from the field and 9-for-16 in the first half, the Tigers took a 44-36 advantage into halftime.
Four-straight Evbuomwan points early in the second half extended Princeton's lead to double digits, 48-38, with 18:22 on the clock. Despite the Tigers' strong start to the half, Brown would battle back and go on a 14-0 run, taking a 54-50 lead with 13:01 left to play.
An Allocco layup with 12:43 remaining halted the Bears' run, and made it a 54-52 contest. The game continued as a back-and-forth battle, with Brown taking a 61-57 lead at 8:45.
A three-pointer by Allocco followed by a three-point play by freshman Xaivian Lee would tie the score, 63-63, with 4:21 on the clock.
The two teams traded baskets, and in the dying stages the contest took a turn for the dramatic. With 1:35 on the clock, Langborg finished a layup through a foul but missed the free throw, which tied the game at 65-65. Brown responded with a jumper at 1:09 to take a 67-65 lead, but Langborg responded with a long three-pointer with 00:56 remaining to put Princeton ahead, 68-67. The Bears would make a three-pointer and get ahead 70-68 with 00:49 remaining, but the Tigers would tie it up, 70-70, with an Allocco layup with 00:32 on the clock. With 00:02 left to play, the Bears rattled in a contested pull-up jumper for the win, 72-70.
