Four Tigers Score as Rookie Corniea Turns in Shutout in Debut
October 14, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
Four Tigers scored and rookie netminder Uma Corniea earned the shutout in her career debut as the Princeton women's hockey team completed an opening-weekend sweep of Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon at Baker Rink.
All four goals came in the second period as Princeton scored three times in a span of less than three minutes before Annie Kuehl, just more than seven minutes after sister Jane Kuehl scored, had the fourth Tiger goal.
Corniea stopped 24 shots in the shutout.
Princeton opened the scoring five-plus minutes into the second period when Katherine Khramtsov took the puck from the red line all the way in and slapped one home from the faceoff dot. Less than 90 seconds later, Jane Kuehl took a cross-ice pass from Maggie Johnson for the finish as rookie Johnson had her first career point on the play. Another first-year Tiger, Callista Chong, had her first career goal to wrap the three-goal spurt, putting in a Khramtsov rebound to put Princeton up 3-0. Annie Kuehl closed the scoring with five-plus minutes to go in the second, following Khramtsov's path that opened the scoring and taking the puck up the final half of the ice for the finish.
Along with Johnson and Chong, Teja Gatfield had her first career point with an assist on Annie Kuehl's goal, making it 14 Tigers and four rookies who scored a point over the season-opening weekend. Seven Tigers split Princeton's 10 goals on the weekend, and Corniea's win follows Taylor Hyland's win between the pipes on Friday night.
Princeton will begin the ECAC Hockey season next Friday at Baker Rink, hosting Yale.
