No. 12 Princeton Battles No. 7 Quinnipiac to OT in 6-5 Defeat
December 09, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
Sarah Fillier had two goals and Issy Wunder, Daniella Calabrese and Sarah Paul had one each as the No. 12-ranked Princeton women's hockey team saw a back-and-forth game go the way of visiting No. 7 Quinnipiac on Saturday afternoon at Baker Rink in the Tigers' final game of 2023.
Princeton will compete next at the Friendship Series in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Jan. 5 and 6 against Providence.
Princeton outshot Quinnipiac 46-18 on goal and 69-37 overall on the day and led 1-0 after Fillier's first goal, six-plus minutes into the game. Quinnipiac, though, scored three times in a span of just less than five minutes during the final six minutes of the first period and took a 3-1 lead into the first ice cut.
The second period was all Princeton, with Wunder, Calabrese, Fillier and Paul all scoring. The last three of those goals came over a span of less than three minutes during the last four minutes of the second as Princeton flipped a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead. As with Quinnipiac's late-period flurry in the first, just one of the three Princeton goals late in the second came on the power play.
But, it was a power play that proved costly for Princeton, as a five-minute penalty yielded two Quinnipiac goals in the third as the Bobcats closed the gap seven-plus minutes into the third. It stayed 5-5 through the end of the third and until midway through the allotted five minutes for the overtime when Sadie Peart, who also had the game-tying goal in the third, had the winner for Quinnipiac.
Jennifer Olnowich played in goal for the first period with Uma Corniea netminding the rest of the way.
Eight Tigers had points on the day, with Fillier adding an assist to her two goals, Wunder getting two assists to go with her goal, and rookie defender Gabby Kim getting two assists for her second two-assist game in less than a month. Calabrese's goal was her first of the season, and Paul continued her hot streak, getting a point for the eighth time in the last nine games. Wunder's three-point game was her fourth of the season and second in the last four games.
The game lifted Fillier's career goal total to 77, tying her for ninth in program history. Now with 93 assists, Fillier moved within a point of third place on the program's career assist list, and with 170 points, Fillier moved into a tie for fifth in program history on that career list.
