March 29, 2023 | Women's Water Polo
PRINCETON – The No. 7 Princeton Women's Water Polo team has a busy weekend with the No. 17 Wagner Seahawks coming to DeNunzio Pool Thursday before a Collegiate Water Polo Association road trip.
It's Senior Night on Thursday as Princeton will honor its five seniors in Alexa Kourepenos, Laura Larkin, Genevieve Fraipont, Annie Robinson and Mindy Pang. That group has combined to win 69 games during its career and produce a .742 winning percentage.
It's also Smoothies for Senior Night in partnership with the Student-Athlete Wellness Leaders and the USG Mental Health Initiative. Fans can also get free stress balls and UMatter giveaways.
Princeton is 19-2 this season and up to No. 7 in the CWPA Varsity poll, one spot shy of tying the program record for best ranking (No. 6 in the final poll of the 2015 season).
The Tigers had won 15 straight games, tied for the fourth-best winning streak in Princeton history, before falling to No. 4 UCLA to finish their West Coast trip. Head coach Derek Ellingson's squad's only other loss this season was to No. 17 Wagner on Jan. 29.
Jovana Sekulic paces the Tigers with 51 goals in 17 contests. Her 3.0 goals per contest is higher than her pace from last season (2.74). She also leads the Tigers in drawn ejections with 59. Rachael Carver is already second all-time with 56 assists this season, nine shy of the Helen Meigs' mark of 65 in 2009. Her 74 points overall is a team high for Princeton. Carver's 109 helpers in her career places her sixth in Tigers' history.
Princeton has five 20+ goal scorers and 10 players with at least 10 goals in Sekulic, Kayla Yelensky (31), Shanna Davidson (31), Kaila Carroll (23), Kate Mallery (20), Robinson (18), Carver (18), Meera Burghardt (17), Larkin (16) and Ava Houlahan (14).
Lindsey Lucas has produced a 17-2 record in goal for the Tigers with a .585 save percentage. She earned six CWPA weekly honors and has collected at least one for each week Princeton has played.
After the Wagner contest, the Tigers head on the road to continue conference action. Ellingson's group will take on Bucknell (12 p.m.) in Cambridge, Mass. and St. Francis (6 p.m.) on Saturday (Apr. 1) in Providence, R.I. The weekend wraps up with No. 13 Michigan on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. in Providence.
