PRINCETON – The Princeton Baseball Team collected a doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon to take the series over the Columbia Lions at Clarke Field.
Columbia 5, Princeton 4
A sacrifice fly and RBI single by Weston Eberly in the first and third innings gave the Lions a 2-0 lead.
The Lions tacked on two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings highlighted by Eberly's third RBI on a single.
Princeton made inroads with back-to-back RBI groundouts from Noah Granet and Matt Scannell in the fifth to cut the deficit in half.
The home squad made another push as RBI singles from Eric Marasheski and Brendan Cumming tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, but Anton Lazits home run in the top of the eighth proved to be the difference.
With two outs in the ninth, Scott Bandura came close to tying the game with a long fly ball to right field, but the right fielder caught it up against the fence.
Princeton had 13 hits in the game with Caden Shapiro recording three while Marasheski, Cumming, Bandura, and Granet each had two in the loss.
Princeton 7, Columbia 5
The Tigers opened the scoring with back-to-back home runs from Bandura and Kyle Vinci in the second inning.
Vinci's home run was his 13th of the season, tying the program mark set by Michael Ciminiello in 1996.
Scannell lined an RBI single to center field in the third frame to put Princeton in front, 3-0.
A home run by Cole Hage and an error got Columbia within one, 3-2 in the fifth, but Granet scored on a passed ball to extend the Tigers' lead back to two, 4-2, in the next half frame.
Columbia did not go away as a Skye Selinsky four-bagger in the seventh made it a one-run contest, 4-3.
Princeton answered in its at-bat in the seventh with an RBI groundout from Marasheski and sacrifice fly from Bandura.
The two teams exchanged runs in the eighth before a Hayden Scott RBI knock got the Lions within two in the ninth. Columbia had the winning run come to plate, but a flyout secured the series victory for Princeton.
Granet had three more hits in game two of the doubleheader and finished the series 8-for-12. Bandura extended his hitting streak to 15 and his on-base steak to 23 with his home run.
Tom Chmielewski retired the first 11 hitters and finished with six innings, one earned run and three strikeouts to corral the victory. Justin Kim pitched the final three innings and struck out three to earn his first career save.
Princeton is tied for fourth in the Ivy League at 7-5 with Yale, trailing Penn (9-3), Columbia (8-4) and Harvard (8-4). The Tigers head to Rider on Wednesday with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
