Ivy Champs! Tigers, Fantinelli Roll to Team, Individual Titles
April 23, 2023 | Men's Golf
It was a team and individual title sweep Sunday for the Princeton men's golfers at the Ivy League Championships at the Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn., as the Tigers made it two of the last three Ivy team titles awarded and rookie Riccardo Fantinelli won medalist honors to become the first Tiger to do so since Quinn Prchal '17 in 2015.
Princeton followed up Saturday's 7-under round with a 2-over Sunday to finish at +16 for the weekend, 18 shots better than runner-up Columbia to win the program's 31st Ivy League title all-time and first since 2019. With the 2020 and 2021 events lost to the pandemic, Princeton has won two of the last three Ivy team titles awarded, and the 18-stroke margin is the largest since Yale won by 22 strokes in 2018. It's Princeton's largest margin of victory at the event since finishing 31 shots ahead of Cornell in 2005.
Fantinelli closed with his best round of the weekend, shooting a 3-under 69 to finish at 5-under for the tournament. Fantinelli's final stroke total of 211 is the lowest at the tournament since Prchal's win in 2015, when he fired a 6-under 210. That tied the record with another Princetonian, Creighton Page '05, who shot 210 to win in 2005. The team-individual sweep is Princeton's first since 2013, when Greg Jarmas '14 won medalist as Princeton took the team title.
Fantinelli is the second consecutive freshman to win medalist honors, with Yale's Ben Carpenter doing so last year. Fantinelli is the third Tiger rookie to win, joining Judd Pritchard '00 (1997) and Nat Hoopes '03 (2000), and Fantinelli is the 12th Tiger overall to win medalist honors, delivering the program its 15th medalist, with three repeat winners, since the Ivy began its own tournament in 1975. Prior to that, the Ivy champion was determined by the top league finisher at the Eastern Intercollegiate tournament.
Fantinelli finished four strokes clear of runner-up Brian Ma of Harvard, making three birdies and an eagle against two bogeys on Sunday. Fantinelli finished his front nine with the eagle, making the par-five ninth in three.
All-Ivy League honors will be announced officially on Thursday, but Fantinelli, Jackson Fretty and William Huang all earned first-team All-Ivy recognition with their top-five finishes. Fretty, a junior, earned his first All-Ivy honor after tying the course record with a 66 on Saturday, finishing at even par while placing third, and Huang, a sophomore, tied for fourth at 3-over, following up his second-team All-Ivy and Rookie of the Year honors from 2022.
With the win, Princeton has earned the Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. The field will be announced May 3 at 1 p.m. ET on the Golf Channel, and the regional tournaments will be held May 15-17. Princeton will compete at one of the sites hosted by Auburn, Clemson, Michigan State, UNLV, Oklahoma or San Jose State.
