Princeton's final regular-season non-league road doubleheader of the spring was a split Tuesday at Villanova, with the Tigers taking the opener 7-5 before the host Wildcats won the nightcap 9-4.
The opener saw a back-and-forth first two innings before the Tigers scored what became the decisive runs in the fourth.
In the top of the first, walks to Serena Starks and Grace Jackson and an Allison Ha base hit loaded the bases for Adrienne Chang, who singled home Jackson and Starks for a 2-0 lead.
Villanova struck right back in the bottom of the inning as five walks and two hits added up to four runs and a 4-2 lead.
Princeton jumped back on top in the second inning, with walks to Starks and Ha putting two on for Chang, who drove home Starks to make it 4-3. Two batters later, Sophia Marsalo picked up Ha and pinch runner Courtney Harrison with a base hit to put Princeton in front 5-4.Â
Villanova tied it at 5-5 in the bottom of the second as a leadoff walk came around to score on a pair of grounders and a stolen base, and it stayed tied until the fourth inning. A walk to Ha and a Julia Dumais base hit put two on for Marsalo, who drove in her third and fourth runs of the game to give Princeton a 7-5 lead.
Brielle Wright got the win in relief, going four shutout innings and allowing five hits and a walk, striking out three.
In the nightcap, Villanova built a 4-0 lead, scoring in three of its first four at-bats. Lilly St. Jean homered in the second inning to open the scoring, and a single and four walks added up to two runs in the third. A walk and a Tess Cites double made it 4-0 for the Wildcats.
Princeton got all four back in the fifth, with Chang homering after Jackson was hit by a pitch, and after a Dumais single, Abby Hornberger hit her first career homer to tie it at 4-4.
Villanova went back on top in its next at-bat when a walk, hit batter and a base hit loaded the bases for an RBI groundout, and the Wildcats closed the scoring with a four-run sixth that saw a Ryan Henry two-run double and an Ava Franz two-run homer.
Princeton will head to Dartmouth for the final regular-season Ivy League weekend, taking a one-game lead over Harvard in the Ivy standings into the three-game visit to Dartmouth.Â
