PRINCETON, N.J. – After leading the Princeton University men's basketball team on a historic run to the Sweet Sixteen, Franklin C. Cappon-Edward C. Green '40 Head Coach Mitch Henderson is set to throw out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, May 24 as the Yankees host the Baltimore Orioles at 7:05 p.m.
The opportunity will bring Henderson full circle to an earlier moment in his own athletic career as the two-sport standout was originally drafted by the Yankees out of high school before electing to attend Princeton where he went on to one of the greatest basketball careers in program history.
"I'm deeply honored to be invited to throw out the first pitch at a Yankees game," said Henderson. "The Yankees are a first-class organization, and have been so supportive of Princeton Athletics over the years. Personally, this moment will be a bit surreal given the path my career could have taken after the Yankees drafted me in 1994. I am excited to finally step onto the field at Yankee Stadium after all these years and represent Princeton Basketball and commemorate a special season for the Tigers."
Henderson, who was drafted by the Yankees with the 24th pick of the 29th round (815th overall) in 1994, led the Tigers to their first Sweet Sixteen of the modern NCAA Tournament era in 2022-23, becoming just the fourth No. 15 seed to do so. Princeton became just the 11th No. 15 seed to beat a No. 2 seed after taking down Arizona, 58-55, in the first round, and earned the largest-ever margin of victory for a No. 15 seed with a 78-63 triumph over No. 7 seed Missouri in the second round. In addition, the Tigers were the Ivy League Tournament, Ivy League regular season and London Basketball Classic champions in 2022-23.
A two-time National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District Coach of the Year, Henderson also recorded his 200th career victory in the 2022-23 season, and became just the eighth men's basketball coach to record 100 Ivy League wins.
A member of the Class of 1998 at Princeton, Henderson was a two-time All-Ivy honoree as a player. Ninth on the Tigers' all-time assists list, Henderson was well known as a key player on the Princeton teams but perhaps none more iconic than his role in the Tigers' 1996 NCAA Tournament win over UCLA.
