June 01, 2023 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
PRINCETON – The No. 1 Women's Lightweight Rowing Team will head to the IRA Championships on Mercer Lake this weekend (June 3-4).
Princeton will go for its second straight IRA team title while the varsity eight will race for its third consecutive gold medal this weekend. Last year, the Tigers won its first ever team title at IRAs while collecting two golds in the varsity eight and varsity double.
The varsity eight has not lost a race to another lightweight boat since the 2019 IRA Championships when it earned a silver medal. Since then, that boat has collected two golds at IRAs, two Eastern Sprints golds and seven wins during the regular season.
This season, the varsity eight went 3-0 in the regular season before earning a gold at Eastern Sprints. The gold at Easterns was the third gold in a row for the Tigers and ninth in program history. The V8 defeated Radcliffe, No. 4 Stanford, and No. 3 Georgetown by over 10 seconds.
Before these back-to-back national crowns, Princeton won five straight national championships from 1999-2003.
IRA action for the Tigers gets underway on Saturday with race for lane heats. The double races at 8 a.m., with the fours are right after at 8:10 and the varsity eight at 8:20. The Grand Finals on Sunday will be 8 a.m. for the doubles, 8:10 a.m. for the fours and 10 a.m. for the eight.
