Tordin on a tear: Pietra Tordin has a team-high seven goals this season, just one off the eight she scored in her Ivy Rookie of the Year season of 2022. Tordin tied the program record with four goals in a game against Army on Sept. 2. Entering the week, Tordin ranked second in the nation in shots per game (6.20), third in goals per game (1.40), fourth in points per game (3.20), sixth in game-winning goals (three), ninth in shots on goal per game (2.40), 12th in total goals (seven) and 13th in total points (16).Â
SOG against: Princeton is on pace to hold its opponents to a Driscoll-era low average of shots on goal per game. Through the season's first five games, Princeton is holding opponents to an average of 3.0 shots on goal per game. In Sean Driscoll's first seven competitive seasons as Princeton's head coach, the Tigers have allowed between 4.0 (2017) and 5.2 (2019) shots on goal per game at season's end.
Against ranked opponents: The Georgetown game will be Princeton's 20th game against a top-25 opponent in Sean Driscoll's tenure at Princeton, which is in its eighth competitive season since beginning with the 2015 campaign. Princeton has won five of those games and tied three with the ranked opponent winning 11. All 19 games have been no more than three goals apart, and five have been decided in overtime, not including the ties. Princeton's last win over a ranked team came in the 2021 season against No. 9 Rutgers, a 4-3 win in Piscataway. Princeton's last game against a ranked opponent was just last week at No. 6 Penn State, a 3-0 loss. Driscoll's teams have two wins and a tie in nine tries against top-10 opponents, with the Rutgers game in 2021 and the 2017 NCAA round of 16 win over North Carolina as the two wins and a 1-1 tie against Georgetown in 2021 as the draw.Â
Between the posts: Junior Tyler McCamey has played most of the minutes in goal this season, accruing an 1.29 GAA while authoring solo or combined shutouts in each of Princeton's first three games of the season, against Monmouth, La Salle (shared) and Rutgers.
Stat rankings: Entering the week, Princeton ranked eighth in the nation in assists per game at 3.20, 15th in shots per game at 19.80, and 27th in points per game at 8.00, among top-30 rankings. Georgetown ranked seventh in GAA (0.286), 10th in save percentage (.909), 10th in shutout percentage (.714), and 13th in corner kicks per game (7.71). Allie Augur paces Georgetown's defensive rankings, standing ninth in GAA (0.20), 11th in save percentage (0.929), and 16th in shutouts (four). Quinnipiac is 10th in shots on goal per game (10.20), 14th in corner kicks per game (7.60), and 23rd in shots per game (19.20). Courtney Chochol paces the Bobcats on offense, standing ninth in shots on goal per game (2.40) and 29th in shots per game (.632).Â
Coach Driscoll: Sean Driscoll is in his eighth competitive season leading Princeton. A three-time Ivy Coach of the Year (2015, 2017, 2018), Driscoll has led Princeton to Ivy titles in 2015, 2017 and 2018, NCAA tournament bids in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2021, the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2015, 2017 and 2021, and the NCAA quarterfinals in 2017. Driscoll's 86 wins are second-most in program history behind predecessor Julie Shackford, who had 203 wins in 20 seasons from 1995-2014.
Familiar faces: A pair of Tiger alumni are playing for Georgetown this season, with Emma Davis '22, a 2018 All-Ivy honorable mention, and Grace Sherman '23, a 2022 All-Ivy honorable mention, pursuing graduate degrees and completing their athletic eligibility at Georgetown. Allie Winstanley, a 2023 Dartmouth alumna and three-time All-Ivy League honoree, is also among the grad students competing for the Hoyas. Both Davis and Winstanley have a goal for Dartmouth this season, and the Tigers were able to keep Winstanley and the rest of the Big Green from scoring in Winstanley's three games with Dartmouth against Princeton.
Series histories: Princeton and Georgetown have met three times, all in the Driscoll era. In 2018, 10th-ranked Georgetown held on for a 2-1 overtime win in Princeton. In 2019, No. 15-ranked Georgetown won again in overtime, this time 4-3 in D.C., with future Hoya Grace Sherman scoring two of Princeton's three goals. The teams' most recent meeting was in 2021, when No. 8-ranked Georgetown drew with the Tigers, 1-1 in D.C. with Jen Estes getting the goal for Princeton, Cyanne Doyle scoring for Georgetown and Allie Augur in goal for the Hoyas. Sunday's game will be Princeton's first against Quinnipiac.Â
On Georgetown: The Hoyas (4-0-3) are averaging a goal a game so far this season and have been even stingier with their opponents, giving up just two goals this season, one in the season opener against Pepperdine and one last time out against No. 2-ranked Stanford. Seven Georgetown players have split the seven goals.
On Quinnipiac: The Bobcats (3-2) have won three in a row after an 0-2 start in which Providence and Dartmouth each shut out Quinnipiac. Since then, the Bobcats have defeated Drexel 2-1, Stonehill 5-0 and Niagara 4-0. Courtney Chochol, Markela Bejleri and Talie Lyon have each scored two goals while five other players have scored one each. Sofia Lospinoso has played every minute in goal, holding a 1.00 GAA.Â
Up next: The Tigers will host Cornell Sept. 23 to open the Ivy League season while Georgetown will also open its league schedule, heading to Big East foe St. John's on Thursday. Quinnipiac will return to MAAC play, hosting Canisius on Sept. 23 after opening MAAC play last Saturday at Niagara.
