Beth Yeager Named To Final US National Team Roster For Pan Am Games, Olympic Qualifying
September 19, 2023 | Field Hockey
The Princeton field hockey team filed out of its teamroom at Bedford Field Sunday before its game against UConn. One after another they walked by. Agatucci. Davidson. Murphy. Jungfer. Yeager. Webb.
Yeager? Yes, there was Beth Yeager, wearing a gray Princeton field hockey t-shirt and not her familiar No. 17 jersey. Yeager has two favorite field hockey teams, and she can only play for one of them at a time, which means this year, if she's at Princeton games, it's as a spectator.
After being a first-team All-American and the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year each of her first two seasons at Princeton, Yeager is taking this year off from school to compete for her other favorite team, the United States women's national team. In fact, she was a member of that team before she ever played a second for the Tigers.
"It was so much fun to be able to watch the Princeton game," Yeager said. "The team looked amazing, and it was great to see so many freshmen stepping into big roles. I can't wait to join the team again next year."
Earlier this week, Yeager was officially named as one of 16 players (15 players, one goalie) who will head to Chile to compete in the Pan American Games. The team will also travel to reserve players, who will be added if one of the original roster members is injured.
The Pan Am Games run from Oct. 26 through Nov. 4. The Americans are in a pool with Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina and Uruguay, while the other pool has Canada, Chile, Mexico and Cuba. The team that wins the gold medal will advance to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
The teams that finish second, third and fourth will then compete in eight-team Olympic play-in tournaments in January, with the women's events to be held either in China or Spain. The top three teams in those tournaments will also get Olympic berths.
"It's an honor to have been selected as part of the Pan American squad," Yeager says. "I am super excited to have the chance to compete in Chile and represent Team USA."
