Morey Looks Ahead to Season on ECAC Media Call
September 19, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
Princeton head coach Cara Morey, whose team was ranked No. 15 in the nation in Monday's USCHO.com preseason rankings, met with media members Tuesday morning on ECAC Hockey's preseason media call.
The Tigers will host an exhibition game against the University of Toronto on Friday at 7 p.m. at Baker Rink with free admission. The regular season will open Oct. 13-14 with a home weekend against Robert Morris. Tickets are available here.
Below are selected quotes from the video conference:
"We have a lot of our veterans returning. We obviously graduated a pretty solid senior class, but we have Sarah (Fillier) back, we have Issy (Wunder) back, and we actually have Sarah Paul coming back. She's been out for two seasons with injuries, and we basically have eight new players coming in, so we don't really know what we're going to see yet. We're pretty excited about what we're seeing so far. We have a new first-year goalie (in Uma Corniea) who's looking really strong right now."
On having Olympic gold medalist Sarah Fillier back for her senior season:Â
"It's great. She's one of the best players in the world. It's awesome having her back. She's excited. She was just at national camp all last week so she was away, and you know you can tell when she's missing and when she comes back. She brings great energy and a boatload of talent. She's our captain and leader, so we're really excited to see what she does this year."
On seeing Maggie Connors '23 drafted to the new Professional Women's Hockey League:Â
"It was really cool, actually. We were watching it in our office and our players were watching it down in the video room, and obviously everybody was waiting for Maggie to get drafted, which was really cool. The whole rink kind of erupted when her name was finally called. I felt like they did a really good job. It looks like it's going to be a real professional league and I think that it's long overdue. I think this should have been probably 15 years ago in the making, but it's great to see it coming together now. I think it's going to be an awesome first season."
On ECAC Hockey:Â
"It's awesome. I think that we always talk about the ECAC is the best league in college hockey. It's definitely the deepest. It's the hardest league to play in. You have a different opponent every single night, and anyone can win every single night you play. I think the recruits coming in understand that and they're really excited about the way we develop our players, the way they move on after college, whether it be this new pro league or internationally, and just the grind of our season, it's what gets them better. So, again, toughest league in college hockey, best league in college hockey, and I think we're showing it with what they do after."
On netminder Taylor Hyland:Â
"Taylor had a great breakout season last year. She was all-rookie goalie for the ECAC. This year, she has come back ready to compete for the net. I think we have three really strong goalies, so right now our net is open to see who's going to rise up and take it between Uma, Taylor and Jen (Olnowich), and they're all battling right now. Taylor looks great and we'll see after we get through some preseason stuff if one of them emerges as a starter or if we do a lot of splitting the net this season, but we'll see after we get through preseason."
