Women's Hockey Team to Host Toronto Friday in Exhibition at Baker
September 20, 2023 | Women's Ice Hockey
In a preview of the season ahead, the Princeton women's hockey team will host the University of Toronto on Friday night at 7 at Baker Rink. Admission is free, and though the game will not be video streamed, live scoring will be available here.
On the Tigers: 11 of 14 players who scored a goal last season are back for 2023-24, including four of the top six point-scorers in Sarah Fillier (19-18-37), Issy Wunder (9-9-18), Katherine Khramtsov (7-9-16) and Annie Kuehl (6-9-15). Maggie Connors (17-16-33) and Mariah Keopple (2-13-15) graduated with the Class of 2023. Three netminders are on the roster this year including both of those who saw game action last season, with junior Jennifer Olnowich (2.55 GAA, 871 minutes) and sophomore Taylor Hyland (2.58, 999), who was the goalie on the All-ECAC Hockey rookie team last year, both back. Uma Corniea, who set the Minnesota state high school record for goalie wins in a career (103), joins the team as a rookie.
On Sarah Fillier: Back for her senior season, the 2022 Olympic gold medalist and three-time IIHF World Championship medalist has one more year to climb the program record lists. Fillier has 151 career points, tied for ninth all-time. Twenty-five more points will tie her for fourth in program history at 176, with only Kelly O'Dell '84 (207), Mollie Marcoux '91 (216) and Katherine Issel '95 (218) in front of her. Fillier's 63 career goals are 15th-most, and 13 more would put her in a three-way tie for 10th, at 76. O'Dell (121), Marcoux (120) and Karen Chernisky '97 (101) are in the top three spots as the program's lone triple-digit goal scorers. Fillier is fourth on the career assist list with 88, with Andrea Kilbourne '03 (94), Marcoux (96) and Issel (122) in front of her.
Behind the Bench: Cara Morey is in her sixth competitive season, and seventh overall including the non-contested pandemic season of 2020-21, as Princeton's head coach. Her 88 wins are second-most in program history behind predecessor Jeff Kampersal '92, who brought Morey to Princeton as an assistant coach ahead of the 2011-12 season. Jamie Lundmark, who spent six seasons in the NHL between the Rangers, Coyotes, Flames, Kings and Maple Leafs, joins the staff as an assistant coach, as does Melissa Samoskevich, a 2020 Quinnipiac alumna who was on the staff at Penn State under Kampersal for three seasons before returning to her alma mater last season.
On Toronto: The Varsity Blues had a 29-4 record in regulation last year, adding another overtime win along with two overtime losses. The team won the Ontario conference's East division with 70 points, 15 more than runner-up Nipissing, and won the Ontario conference playoffs. From there, Toronto fell in the national U Sports quarterfinals to Mount Royal University out of Calgary before defeating the University of New Brunswick and St. Francis Xavier University out of Nova Scotia to win the consolation final. Last year's team had three double-figure goal scorers in Kaitlyn McKnight (14), Taylor Trussler (13) and Nikki McDonald (12), while McDonald (28) was the team's points leader with Natasha Athanasakos' 21 assists helping her on the way to 26 points. Trussler (24), McKnight (22) and Sophia Grawbarger (20) also had 20-plus points. Erica Fryer (1.30 GAA in 1,297 minutes) and Madeline Albert (1.14 in 843) split time in goal. All of those mentioned except for Albert are back this season.
