No. 12 Princeton Wins Belfast Friendship Series, Sweeping Providence
January 06, 2024 | Women's Ice Hockey
Capitalizing on a 5-on-3 chance with a Sarah Paul goal with two minutes left in the third period, the No. 12-ranked Princeton women's hockey team completed a sweep of Providence to win the two-game Friendship Series at the SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland on Saturday.
The win delivered ECAC Hockey its second straight sweep in what was the third edition of the Friendship Series against a Hockey East team. League-mate Quinnipiac swept Hockey East's Merrimack in the last series, held in 2020, after Hockey East's Northeastern had a win and a tie over ECAC Hockey's Clarkson in 2019.
Jennifer Olnowich went the distance in goal and made her last 24 saves after allowing a first-period goal that gave Providence the lead. Hannah Johnson, parked in front of the net, took a pass in from Maddy Coene to score five minutes in.
Sarah Fillier tied it on a breakaway just after the midway point of the second period when Issy Wunder got between a Providence pass in the Friars' attacking zone and flipped it to Fillier just ahead of the Princeton attacking blue line, and Fillier beat Providence netminder Hope Walinski five-hole to square things at 1-1.
That's where it stood until late in the third. Providence's Kiara Kraft drew a hooking penalty with less than four minutes to go, and just 36 seconds later, Cristina Cavaliere drew a delay-of-game penalty that gave Princeton 1:24 worth of a 5-on-3. With 23 seconds left on the 5-on-3, Paul buried the eventual game-winner and beat Walinski stick side on a tough angle near the bottom of the faceoff circle.
Fillier earned Player of the Game honors, getting the first goal and assisting on the second, and had Player of the Tournament honors with two goals and four assists between the two games.
The win completed a perfect non-conference regular season at 7-0. The Tigers will return to ECAC Hockey play next weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard.
