Tigers Top Lafayette 3-0 to Open Three-Match Homestand
October 01, 2024 | Women's Soccer
On a night that saw Princeton enjoy a lopsided shot advantage, Brooke Dawahare, Isabella Garces and Alexandra Barry each scored to help the Tiger women's soccer team to a 3-0 win on Tuesday at Roberts Stadium.
Princeton outshot Lafayette 25-5 overall and 13-2 on goal on the way to posting a second consecutive 3-0 win following Saturday's Ivy-opening win at Cornell. Princeton will return to Ivy League play with a visit from Brown on Saturday before Penn comes to Roberts on Oct. 9.
Princeton opened the scoring when Dawahare finished a play that began with a Pietra Tordin corner kick that Kate Toomey kept from being cleared at the edge of the 18 and Zoe Markesini then sent back toward goal for Dawahare to slide past first-half Lafayette keeper Catherine Apker 16-plus minutes in.
Garces' goal came on a penalty kick after she battled a pair of Lafayette defenders in the Leopards' defensive 18 before the ball found the foot and then the arm of another Lafayette defender, drawing a whistle for a handball. Garces converted the PK, and Princeton had a 2-0 lead more than five minutes into the second half.
Barry scored the final goal with two minutes to go, sending in a rebound off a Tordin shot that Lafayette second-half keeper Maddie Miniutti saved and then saw Barry win the race with a Lafayette defender for the loose ball.
Cecilia Cerone, a sophomore who made her first career start in her third career appearance, stopped two shots to pick up her first career shutout. All three goals came from underclassmen, with sophomore Garces and first-years Dawahare and Barry each scoring her third goal of the season.Â
