PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team completed the weekend sweep Saturday evening inside Dillon Gymnasium as it downed Dartmouth, 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 16-25, 25-17).
The victory was the 199th of Head Coach Sabrina King's career, moving her just one short of 200.
Sophomore Kamryn Chaney led the way for Princeton with a match-high 17 kills, eight digs and two service aces. Freshman Jackie Onyechi tied her career-high in kills with 13 on a .632 hitting percentage and added six blocks while junior Lucia Scalamandre also tallied 13 kills on a .320 hitting percentage along with six digs.
Sophomore Sydney Draper's 47 assists were a match-high; currently only two players in the nation have recorded more than 47 assists in a three-set match, Logan Flaugh of Xaiver (49) and Camryn Turner of Kansas (48).
Sophomore Sydney Bold recorded a match-high 20 digs and freshman Nicki Gaito a career-high 10.
The first set saw Princeton jump out to an 8-6 lead, then use a 3-0 run, ignited by a Chaney kill, to take an 11-6 advantage. The Big Green responded with a 5-0 run to tie it up at 11-11, but a pair of Dartmouth errors along with an Onyechi block put Princeton in front, 14-12. The Big Green would soon battle back, using a 3-0 run and taking a 20-19 lead. The two teams would battle back-and-forth, then reach a stalemate at 23-23. A double block by Scalamandre and senior Shelby Fulton gave the Tigers set point, then Princeton prevailed in the set, 25-23, after a Dartmouth attacking error.
Dartmouth raced out to an 11-3 advantage in the second set, but a kill by Chaney ignited a 6-1 run that narrowed the deficit to 12-9. With Dartmouth up 16-14, a Scalamandre kill led a 3-0 run that gave Princeton the lead, 17-16. The Big Green would knot the score at 23-23, but a Dartmouth attacking error followed by a kill by Chaney saw the Tigers go up 2-0 in the match and earn a 25-23 second set victory.
Princeton took an early 5-2 lead in the third set, but Dartmouth would eventually swing the momentum its way and take a 14-11 lead. The set belonged to the Big Green from there, who went on to win it 25-16.
The Tigers bounced back in the fourth set, opening with a Scalamandre kill followed by a pair of Chaney kills. Shortly after, a kill by Onyechi led a 4-0 run that put the Tigers ahead by seven, 10-3. The momentum stayed with Princeton in set four, with kills Fulton and junior Valerie Nutakor putting the Tigers up 13-5. Chaney's 17th kill of the match gave Princeton a 20-12 advantage, then it was Scalamandre who took over down the stretch. She recorded back-to-back kills to give Princeton match point at 24-15, then slid right and delivered a kill on match point as the Tigers took the fifth set, 25-17, and the match, 3-1.
