ITHACA, N.Y. – The Princeton University women's volleyball team secured its second-straight weekend sweep Saturday night inside Newman Arena, as it took down Cornell, 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19).
The win was the 201st of Head Coach Sabrina King's career, as she now embarks on the journey to 300 victories.
Sophomore Kamryn Chaney exceeded the 20-kill mark for the sixth time this season and recorded her eighth double-double, tallying a match-high 23 kills on a .400 hitting percentage along with a match-high 11 digs. Sophomore Sydney Draper handed out a team-high 44 assists and added nine digs while freshman Jackie Onyechi had a match-high three blocks. Senior Gracie Wood along with sophomores Sydney Bold and Erin McNair each accumulated a team-high two service aces.
The Tigers opened the first set with a 3-0 run, but Cornell would soon respond with a 4-0 run and jump ahead, 9-7. The Big Red would eventually extend its advantage to 17-13, but Princeton was able to chip away and reduce the deficit to one, 19-18, after a Chaney kill. Cornell pulled away from there, earning the 25-21 first set triumph.
An early Onyechi kill saw Princeton go on a 6-0 run in the second set, taking a 6-1 lead. Shortly after, Princeton used a 4-0 run that included a trio of Cornell errors along with a kill by Chaney to go up eight, 14-6. While the Big Red were able to narrow the deficit, Princeton held on for the 25-20 triumph in the second set.
The Tigers raced out to a 6-2 advantage in the third set with help from an early 4-0 run. Cornell would eventually tie it up at 13-13, but a Fulton kill followed by a Big Red bad set put Princeton back in front, 16-14. With The Tigers up 20-10, a Cornell service error followed by a junior Valerie Nutakor kill and a Big Red attacking error gave Princeton a 23-19 advantage. From there, the Tigers would go on to take down Cornell in the third set, 25-21.
A pair of Big Red attacking errors followed by a Nutakor kill and a Bold service ace put the Tigers in front, 6-3 in the fourth set. Another kill by Nutakor would soon spark a 3-0 run that gave Princeton a 10-5 advantage. With Princeton up three, 19-16, a setter dump by Draper ignited a 4-0 that put the Tigers ahead, 23-16. Fittingly, it was Chaney who put down her 23rd kill on match point to secure the 25-19 fourth set victory and the 3-1 triumph in the match.
