Princeton Tops Yale To Finish Perfect League Season As Ivy Tournament Field Comes Into Shape
November 02, 2024 | Field Hockey
The sheet that the Ivy League office sent out this week with possible scenarios for its upcoming field hockey tournament stretched through four pages. There were five teams in contention for the final two spots, and the possibilities seemed endless.
At the top, though, were the two certainties: Princeton would be the No. 1 seed and host, and Harvard would be the No. 2 seed. Even with that established, though, there was plenty at stake in the regular season finale for the Tigers Saturday afternoon. For Princeton, there was the question of an outright Ivy championship and perfect Ivy season. For Yale, there was a chance to play its way into the Ivy tournament.
In a game with the feel of the playoffs, Princeton edged Yale 1-0 on a Beth Yeager goal on a penalty stroke with 3:14 to play. Princeton had drawn the stroke when Yeager connected with Ella Cashman on a penalty corner and a Yale defender's body stopped Cashman's redirect.
There were two other games played at the same time as Princeton-Yale, as Harvard defeated Cornell 4-0 and Brown defeated Penn 4-3. Even after the results of Saturday's three games, the final tournament field won't be settled until Sunday's game between Columbia and Dartmouth in New York City, though a lot more has been settled.
The semifinals Friday at Bedford Field will see Princeton play at 11:30 against an opponent to be determined and then Harvard play third-seeded Brown at 2:30. The final will be Sunday at noon, with the winner to get an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The fourth team in the tournament will be Columbia if it beats Dartmouth or Yale if Dartmouth beats Columbia.
Yale coud have clinched a spot with a win over Princeton, and the Bulldogs came out strong, putting up six first quarter shots to one for Princeton but unable to break through. From that point forward, Princeton outshot Yale 13-3 and had several great scoring chances, only to see Yale goalie Alexa Pitts make some sterling saves to keep it scoreless.
After the stroke was called, though, Yeager calmly sent it into the back of the cage for her Ivy-leading 15th of the season.

... and Beth cashes it in for the only goal of the day.
