Princeton Falls To Dartmouth 26-17
November 08, 2024 | Football
Connor Hulstein made the catch, started upfield and hurdled the Dartmouth defender in his path. On a night of hurdles for the Princeton football team, some were cleared, while were just a bit too high.
Princeton led early and tried to come back late, and when it was all over, it was Dartmouth who came off Powers Field with a win, by the score of 26-17. The win improved the Big Green to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Ivy League, guaranteed of being in a first place tie with the winner of Saturday's game between Columbia and Harvard.
As for the Tigers, they fell to 2-6, 1-4 in the league on a night that, once again, showed that the gap between the teams who are still hoping to lift the big trophy at the end and the ones who will not is, as always, not that vast.
Princeton scored first, as Hulstein scored on an eight-yard pass from Blaine Hipa midway through the opening quarter. Dartmouth, though, responded with the next three touchdowns, including one with 15 seconds left before the half, making it a 21-7 Big Green lead at the break.
If Dartmouth thought it had itself a runaway, though, Princeton had other ideas. The defense held the Big Green without a touchdown in the second half, while Hipa led the offense to a touchdown (on an 18-yard pass to Luke Colella) and then field goal (27 yards by Sam Massick), sandwiched around a 33-yard Owen Zalc field goal.
Suddenly it was a one-possession game at 24-17 Dartmouth midway through the fourth quarter, and when the defense got another stop, Princeton looked like it would have a shot at driving to try to tie or win the game. Instead, Dartmouth punter Davis Golick pinned the Tigers at the two yard line, and two plays later Hipa was trapped in the end zone for an intentional grounding and safety.
Hipa finished 11 for 18 for 137 yards and the two touchdowns. There were four Tigers who had double figures in tackles with 13 for Marco Scarano while Nasir Hill and Chase Christopher secured 12 each. Payton Tally nabbed 11 as well.
Princeton is at Yale next Saturday and then home against Penn.
