PHILADELPHIA – It was a historic night inside Hagan Arena as junior Xaivian Lee recorded the first triple double in Princeton University men's basketball history Tuesday night with 18 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists as the Tigers downed the Saint Joseph's, 77-69.
Lee's triple double is the first by a Tiger since assists were recorded beginning in the 1974-75 season. His 18 points, which tied the team-high, came on 7-for-14 shooting and his 13 rebounds were both a game and career-high, as were his 10 assists.
Senior Philip Byriel had a career-night and tied Lee for the team-high, scoring a career-high 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting from three, with his six three-pointers a career-best. Junior Caden Pierce added 15 points on 7-for-13 shooting, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks while senior Blake Peters added 12 points and four rebounds.
The Tigers also out-rebounded the Hawks, 39-34.
Propelled by a pair of early three-pointers by Byriel, the Tigers raced out to a 10-7 advantage over the Hawks with 17:07 on the clock. Shortly after, Princeton extended its advantage to eight, 22-14, with 12:49 remaining in the half after a dunk by freshman Malik Abdullahi followed by a freshman Peyton Seals three-pointer.
The second half was a back-and-froth battle and while a Pierce layup kept Princeton up four with 13:52 remaining, Saint Joseph's took the lead at 53-52 with 11:16 on the clock. With the Hawks ahead 58-56 with 7:28 remaining, a layup by sophomore Jackson Hicke followed by a Byriel three-pointer put the Tigers back in front, 61-58, with 5:35 on the clock.
Princeton did not look back from there; Lee's historic moment came with 1:16 remaining when he dished the ball off to Pierce who completed a layup plus the foul, bringing his assist total to 10 and completing the triple double. Peters made a pair of free throws with 0:40 left to play that gave the Tigers a 75-67 lead, and Princeton would hold on for the 77-69 victory.
The Tiger face Furman (7-1) at 12 p.m. on Nov. 7 in Greenville, South Carolina, at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
