PRINCETON, N.J. – A late three-pointer by sophomore Dalen Davis pushed the Princeton University men's basketball team past Akron Monday afternoon inside Jadwin Gymnasium, 76-75, as the Tigers overcame a 15-point deficit to down the Zips in their final contest of 2024.
With 0:01 remaining and the Tigers trailing 75-73, Davis caught the ball on the left wing then took one dribble to his left and elevated for the game-winning three-pointer.
Senior Blake Peters connected on his 156th three-pointer, which tied him for No. 9 all-time in program history for most made threes with Kyle Koncz '08 and Steven Cook '17.
The Zips raced out to a 10-7 lead with 14:26 on the clock and would hold onto the lead for much of the first half. Akron extended its advantage to double figures at 30-20 with 5:35 left in the half, but layups by Lee and freshman Peyton Seals narrowed deficit to six, 30-24, with 3:46 remaining in the half. Despite the late rally, Akron took a 41-30 advantage into halftime.
Akron came out of halftime and took a 15-point lead with 18:50 remaining, 45-30, but a Lee layup followed by a senior Philip Byriel three-pointer brought it back to a 10-point game, 45-35, at 17:47. A short jumper by Seals made it a single figure contest, 50-41, with 12:59 left to play and three-pointer by Hicke brought the lead down to eight, 61-53, with 8:56 remaining.
A Lee layup at 7:40 ignited a 7-0 run that made it a 66-60 contest with 6:14 on the clock. There was no quit in the Tigers, as Hicke's second three-pointer of the contest reduced the deficit to three, 70-67, at 3:17. A layup then a pair of free throws by Davis tied it up at 73-73 with 0:39 left to play, but a tip-in by the Zips with 0:10 on the clock put Akron 75-73.
Davis' game-winning shot followed, and while initially ruled a two, following a review the officials deemed the shot a three-point basket and the Tigers would end 2024 with the one-point victory over the Zips.
