No. 12 Princeton Takes No. 3 Clarkson to Double OT in ECAC Quarterfinal Opener
March 01, 2024 | Women's Ice Hockey
Both regular-season meetings between the Princeton women's hockey team and Clarkson were one-goal games, and Friday's ECAC Hockey quarterfinal opener turned out no different.
An Alexie Guay goal six-plus minutes into double overtime ended the fourth-longest game in Princeton women's hockey history as the No. 12-ranked Tigers fell to No. 3 Clarkson 3-2 in the opening game of the best-of-three series in Potsdam, N.Y.
Princeton tied it on a Sarah Paul power-play goal with six minutes left in the first period, just 39 seconds after Jenna Goodwin gave Clarkson a 1-0 lead. The tie persisted until Kate Monihan had a rebound goal with less than four minutes to go in the second period to put Princeton up 2-1, and the Tigers were 84 seconds away from taking a series lead when the empty-net extra attacker paid off for Clarkson as Nicole Gosling, who scored both goals in the two 1-0 Clarkson wins over Princeton earlier this season, struck to tie it.
Jennifer Olnowich made 33 stops as the Golden Knights outshot the Tigers on goal 36-34.Â
At 86:32, the game was the fourth-longest in Princeton program history and longest since Sarah Fillier's quarterfinal series-winning goal in 2020 at Baker Rink against Quinnipiac. At 88:36, that was the third-longest game, behind only two other ECAC quarterfinal games, against RPI in 2009 (96:00) and Quinnipiac in 2017 (106:34).Â
The teams will reconvene Saturday at 3 p.m. with Clarkson a win away from advancing to the ECAC semifinals and Princeton needing a win to force a decisive third game on Sunday.Â
