Shapiro Produces Three Hits; Throws Three Scoreless Frames In 10-8 Win Over Old Dominion

NORFOLK – Caden Shapiro produced three hits and had three shutout innings on the mound as the Princeton Baseball Team earned a 10-8 win over the Old Dominion Monarchs on Tuesday afternoon.

After putting a runner in scoring position in the first two innings, the Tigers finally broke through in the third. Matt Scannell led off the inning with a monster shot over the right field fence while Jake Bold blasted a home run a few batters later.

Bryce Gayan added to the Tigers' advantage with an RBI single in the fourth stanza. Jackson Tone tied the game for Old Dominion on a three-run double in the bottom of the fourth.

Princeton immediately answered in its next at bat. Kyle Vinci walked with the bases loaded to put the Tigers back in front before Jake Koonin came through with a two-run single. Jake Kernodle tacked on an RBI knock to put head coach Scott Bradley's group up four, 7-3.

The home team got three back in the sixth before each squad tallied a run in the seventh to set the contest at 8-7.

Kernodle hit his second home run of the season in the ninth to extend the Tigers' advantage to three, 10-7. He finished with two hits and three RBI.

After allowing a run in the ninth, Jacob Faulkner closed out the game with two strikeouts to give Princeton the victory. It's the first win over the Monarchs since 2005.

Kelly had two hits and scored two runs while Patrick Jarvis struck out five in two innings to collect the win.

The Tigers and Monarchs finish off the series Wednesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
